This is how you drive the AMG GT R at the Nürburgring Nordschleife! After a co-pilot lap with Andy Gülden, it's then into my McLaren 675LT Spider to give chase as well. The Beast of the Green Hell well and truly shows its colours, what a monster on the Green Hell.
During the Nürburgring's training course I had the opportunity to jump on board the AMG GT R with Andy, head of the Driving Academy and an absolutely brilliant driver. With the GT R set to "O F F mode", but wearing the Pirelli Pzero tyres as opposed to the Michelin Sport Cup 2s thanks to some rainfall earlier in the day, it's an exceptionally quick lap, 7 minutes 14 from bridge to gantry in fact, even with a load of traffic along the way and a major hold up for a training group of Audi R8s.
However, that's not all! With my McLaren 675LT Spider present, there's an opportunity to give chase to the GT R, for some serious training. Along the way we also come across a McLaren 620R going at some serious pace to add even more fun to the lap of the Nordschleife.
Having attended the Nürburgring Driving Academy's Sports Driver Training Nordschleife XL, I've really had the opportunity to learn significantly more about the Green Hell. The program included a track walk to take in the elevation changes, undulations and discover more about the wet and dry line, especially feeling the tarmac changes. It then followed with a full day featuring lead-follow laps to really get comfortable with more of the brake points, turning in marks, apexes and generally hone in on some of the more challenging sections.
